The US Fish and Wildlife Service seeks to engage young professionals in natural resource careers. You must be:

Position Description:

The Conservation Communications Intern will support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ecological Services program by developing engaging communication materials that highlight conservation projects, staff, and impact across the Midwest region (IA, IL, IN, OH, MI, MO, MN & WI). The intern will work closely with both Ecological Services staff and the Office of Communications to translate technical conservation work into accessible content for a variety of audiences.

Responsibilities:

The intern will:
  • Develop 1–2 written stories per month highlighting conservation projects, outreach efforts, and staff.
  • Create and publish monthly social media content.
  • Contribute to internal and external communications, including newsletters, partner communications, and media outreach.
  • Assist in drafting a two-year communications plan for the Midwest Ecological Services program.
  • Conduct interviews and gather information from staff and field sites to support storytelling efforts.
  • Collaborate with biologists and communications professionals across multiple field offices.
 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will demonstrate:
  • Educational background in communications, journalism, public affairs, environmental science, ecology, or a related field
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate scientific information to broad audiences
  • Experience or interest in communications, outreach, media relations, or public engagement
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional setting

Through this internship, participants will:
  • Develop professional writing and science communication skills.
  • Gain experience creating content for government communications platforms
  • Build skills in social media strategy and audience engagement.
  • Strengthen project management and organizational skills.
  • Gain exposure to conservation fieldwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Explore additional technical skills such as GIS and field survey methods, depending on interest.
