Cameron Park Zoo offers a 12-week Animal Care Internship designed for students or recent graduates interested in pursuing careers in animal care within a zoo or aquarium setting. Interns will work approximately 20–24 hours per week, assisting animal care staff with daily husbandry tasks and habitat maintenance. Interns will rotate through all animal care areas, including mammals, herpetology, birds, veterinary, aquatics, and animal ambassadors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with animal husbandry, including feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and maintaining detailed records.
- Support animal care staff during public presentations and behind-the-scenes keeper tours.
- Learn about zoo operations, wildlife conservation, and animal care career pathways.
- Adhere to zoo safety protocols and perform duties in varying weather conditions and environments.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the internship
- High school senior intending to pursue a degree in a related field OR currently enrolled in/recently graduated from an accredited college program in a related field (e.g., Biology, Psychology, Zoology, Animal Science, etc.).
- Available to work 20–24 hours per week, including weekends and holidays.
- Physically able to perform required tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs., walking, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must pass a background check and provide proof of a negative TB test.
- Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
Additional Information
- This is a paid and part-time internship.
- Cameron Park Zoo will assist with documentation for university credit, if applicable.
- Interns will gain hands-on experience and should be aware of the potential risks associated with working near wild animals.
